Centre for the Blind / Visual Impairment
Mathru was among the first few institutions in Karnataka to receive recognition for this kind of holistic support for blind students. Over two decades, more than 200 visually impaired students and teachers benefitted from this program. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought unforeseen challenges. With a significant drop in student enrolment post COVID, the Trust made the difficult decision to close the residential school. Despite this change, our commitment to supporting visually impaired students remains unwavering. Today, we assist those pursuing higher education by providing Braille books, volunteer-led training, examination scribes, and other academic support.
Looking ahead, we aim to expand this initiative with a structured process and a team of trained educators.

Residential School for the Hearing Impaired – Hearing Impairment
Mathru’s School for Hearing Impaired, established in 2012, is a model of inclusive education in Karnataka. Located on a lush one-acre land granted by the state, it includes classrooms, a library, computer lab, dorms, and activity rooms. The school follows the Karnataka State syllabus with English medium and blends academics with arts, sports, and life skills.
Children from grades 3–9 are trained in basic computer skills and data entry. Vocational training includes tailoring, housekeeping, horticulture, and carpet weaving to support future independence. Students needing hearing aids are identified, supported, and guided by an in-house speech therapist. The school provides medical care, educational supplies, and nutritious meals to over 70 children daily.
Smart classrooms, STEM lab, and a play area enhance the learning environment. Special educators personalize teaching based on each child’s unique needs. A kitchen garden now supplements meals with home-grown vegetables and spices.

Deafblind and multisensory disabilities
Mathru began supporting deafblind and multisensory-impaired individuals in 2014, in collaboration with Sense International India, and has independently managed the program since 2023. A dedicated centre in DJ Halli serves 31 individuals through both centre-based and home-based services with trained special educators.
Home visits ensure customized, family-inclusive care, empowering both children and their caregivers. We focus on early intervention, conducting awareness campaigns and helping families access government schemes and services. Children receive support in communication, mobility, daily living skills, and are encouraged to join mainstream schools where possible.
Professional therapies including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy are provided as needed. All essentials like nutritive supplements, medical care, uniforms, and assistive aids are ensured.
Mathru also partners with government agencies to run disability awareness and inclusion programs across Karnataka. A strong parent support system helps families from low-income backgrounds navigate disability-related challenges. We work closely with Asha workers, Anganwadis, SSA teachers, and NGOs to improve quality of life for children and their families.

Mathru Vocational training centre for intellectually disabled and slow learners
Established in 2020, Mathru Learning Centre supports children with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, and other intellectual disabilities through holistic education.
In 2023, we expanded to launch a Vocational Training Centre for young adults (15+) with intellectual and multiple disabilities. Our focus shifted to real-world skills, independence, and employment readiness, recognizing limited impact of academics beyond a certain age.
Vocational training includes cooking, tailoring, housekeeping, gardening, carpet weaving, and decorative item making. We also teach basic academics, computer literacy, and support with mobility, sensory integration, and social interaction.
Activities like sports, art, outings, and festival celebrations build confidence and connection. A safe and adaptive learning space ensures every learner progresses at their own pace.
Families receive free education, uniforms, learning aids, medical guidance, and counselling. We help parents understand their child’s abilities and access government schemes and resources. At Mathru, we grow together—empowering both children and families toward a life of dignity and purpose.
