About Mathru
Founded in 2001 by Ms. Muktha Gubbi and other like minded individuals, Mathru Educational Trust for the blind began as a small residential school for blind children in Bangalore, starting with just five students in a rented space. Over the last 25 years, it has grown into an well-respected organization dedicated to empowering children with a range of disabilities. With a mission of education, rehabilitation and empowerment, Mathru has positively impacted the lives of over 250 children and their families.
In 2015, to reflect our broader mission, the Trust was renamed Mathru Educational Trust for the Blind and Other Disabled. Currently, we serve over 200 children from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Our Journey Supporting the Visually Impaired
Initially focused on serving the blind community, Mathru operated a full-fledged residential school equipped with all necessary facilities. Children were taught Karnataka state syllabus in Braille, provided books in Braille, audio recordings and supported by a dedicated team of teachers and volunteers. Beyond academics, students actively participated in cultural and sports competitions excelling in singing, debating, and more.
Raising Awareness, Building Acceptance, and Empowering Families
At Mathru, we believe that early identification, acceptance, and support are crucial in empowering children with disabilities. While there are several government schemes designed to support and uplift children with disabilities, awareness about these opportunities remains limited among many families. Mathru is actively working to bridge this gap. We collaborate closely with government agencies to raise awareness about disabilities and to educate families about the best ways to support their children. They also work with parents to help them understand their child’s condition and the various approaches to improve their quality of life. We assist families in availing benefits under various government welfare schemes.
To foster greater understanding within the broader community, we also organize walkathons, public awareness campaigns, and community events bringing people together in support of inclusion, acceptance, and dignity for every child.
A Sensory Park - Service to community from Mathru
Children with special needs often learn best through sensory stimulation—touch, sound, sight, and movement play a crucial role in their development. Unfortunately, regular public parks are not always designed to meet these unique learning and sensory needs, offering little benefit in terms of engagement or therapeutic value. Local leadership, Mr. Vishwanath got a land allocated to Mathru impressed by Ms. Muktha’s vision for the creation of a dedicated sensory park. Ms. Muktha collaborated with BBMP officials and specialists to design and bring this sensory park to life. The result is a beautiful, inclusive space where both children with special needs and their peers can learn, explore, and enjoy together.
This sensory park stands as a result of vision, compassion, and community support —a place where learning meets play, and every child feels seen, included, and celebrated.
