Centre for the Blind

Centre for the Blind

What began as a small rented space for a few visually challenged students evolved into a fully equipped residential school for the blind by 2005, emphasizing quality education, computer skills, music, life skills, mobility, socialization in a premises designed to enhance their capabilities with generous donor support. Introduced an innovative e-slate/Braille Tutor, significantly improving Braille learning in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, USA in 2006. Our teachers also benefited from the training and higher education programmes. Over two decades, more than 250 students and teachers benefited from these efforts.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought unforeseen challenges, including a sharp decline in enrolment, leading to the difficult decision to close the residential school. Despite this, our commitment to supporting visually impaired students continues. Today, we assist those in higher education with Braille books, volunteer-led training, scribes for exams, and academic support. As we look ahead, we aim to expand our impact through a structured approach and a team of trained educators dedicated to empowering the visually challenged.

Recognizing our service towards the visually impaired, department for the empowerment of the differently-abled has given two state awards in 2006 and 2015.

A Journey of Determination, Excellence, and Inspiration

Born blind, Chinmayi did not limit her vision for life. Her parents moved from Sandur to Bengaluru to support her education at Mathru. A bright spark from the start, she topped SSLC exams with 98%, the highest among disabled students.
Later, in Reva College, was honoured with an ‘Excellency Award’. In 2024-25, she set a new record by scoring distinction with 100% in Psychology! Her aspiration is to achieve next level of excellence in public administration.
Chinmayi is more than a topper — she’s an inspiration to us all. We at Mathru are proud to be part of our journey! Chinmayi’s story is an example of what's possible when support, opportunity, and determination come together.
